The program will be broken into a three day ‘Basic Training’, followed by two days of ‘Advanced Topics’. Sessions will mix theory and practice, balancing lectures with hands-on exercises. (Each student must bring a laptop capable of virtualizing hosts for the lab portion. Contact for suggestions and details)
Course Description
Basic Training
This training is ideal for Puppet newcomers or sysadmins who want a Puppet jumpstart. Newer members at an organization already using Puppet, or experienced sysadmins wanting to bring Puppet into their team will get everything they need to deploy solutions.
Prerequisites: Attendees should have at least the equivalent experience of a junior Unix/Linux administrator.

- The Resource Abstraction Layer – Provisioning and Discovery
- Using the Puppetca
- Ralsh and resources definitions
- The Puppet files server
- Puppet client and server communication
- Bootstrapping Puppet
- Designing your Puppet architecture
- Getting the most from Puppet’s language
- Using Puppet with a source code manager (SCM)
- An introduction to Puppet Modules
- Getting Feedback From Puppet

Advanced Topics
Once a sysadmin is comfortable with daily Puppet usage, there are opportunities to use more advanced techniques. Attendees should be familiar with all of the topics covered in the Introductory class.
Prerequisites: A working knowledge of Puppet or attend the Basic Training.
